Academic PCs Website Down for over 24hrs Due to Spammed Comments–Resolved Today May 12th, 2011

12 May

We apologize for our website being down.  We have undergone surgery to remove a spammers code in our database.  This code of course was just some comments.

Our webhost StartLogic suspended our account.  We became aware of the suspension yesterday morning.  We contacted StartLogic by phone and were notified that there was spam in the database file called wrd_halmgejjja under the comments section.

We were told that we needed to delete the comments that contained spam in it.  We requested that they grant us access to the database yesterday morning and was told that we would be able to access it in a few hours.  We waited up until evening and called them again requesting access to the database to correct the issue.  We also sent emails requesting access to our website so we can correct the issue. We did not receive that access until this morning.

We into the database wrd_halmgejjja and looked under the comments section and here is a snapshot of some of the things we saw inside of it.

We deleted all of the comments that appeared to be spam.  This is a snapshot of all of the comments that are now left in the database file.

After correcting the database and sending an email to StartLogic our website is now back up and running.

The lesson that we have learned is that our webhost service provider will shut down our website if we don’t keep a close enough eye on the comments that people send us through the WordPress.  We do not believe in spam and will continue to fight against it.

We believe that StartLogic took inappropriate actions that could have been handled without shutting down our website.  We do value StartLogic and there fighting cause against Spam but would of like to receive better notification of any problems with our website.

The original notification was sent to an old email address and said that our account is currently consuming excessive resources on their database servers.  To maintain your StartLogic account, we will need you to reduce the amount of databases queries on your website immediately.

This was not the problem in our case.  The problem was that they believed we had the potential for consuming excessive resources if we allowed comments in the WordPress database that potentially contain Spam in them.

NOTICE TO ALL USERS OF OUR WEBSITE

We do welcome comments that are meaningful and respectful to our website.  Please do not send comments that contain Spam in them.  Do not use the comment section for advertising your business.  We do not provide free advertising in our comments section.  We will consider this to be SPAM and your comment will be deleted.

We will continue to provide and find the best technical articles, beta reviews, and news worthy technical information.  Please help support us and our cause and we will continue to grow and become a better business.

Thanks,

Academic PCs
